Properties of Kunzite
Kunzite crystals are classed as semiprecious gemstones. Spodumene was discovered in 1877 in Brazil. The original finds of gem quality spodumene were yellow green in color, and it was known as chrysoberyl. Gemstone quality kunzite, such as this sparkling specimen, is translucent or transparent with a vitreous luster.
Mineralogically, kunzite is a form of Spodumene. Spodumene comes in colors ranging from white, gray, yellow, emerald green, to pink, violet or pearly colored. Traditionally, only the pink to lilac colorations of spodumene were called kunzite, but recently the yellow varieties of spodumene have also been called kunzite, and we are comfortable with that nomenclature. Green spodumene is often called Hiddenite.
Kunzite, or spodumene, is the most common Lithium ore on Earth, an aluminum silicate. Spodumene exhibits thermoluminescence, chatoyancy and often fluoresces under ultra-violet light.
Because kunzite forms as prismatic crystals with strong striations parallel to their principal axis and has perfect cleavage, it is extremely difficult to cut into pendants, so kunzite pendants are unique and rare finds.
The coloring in the violet & the pink forms of the silicate mineral spodumene, comes from the presence of manganese.
Spodumene is an important industrial source of lithium.
