New Poetry Winter 2004-05

A blue caterpillar makes its leggy return
to a silk cloister on the sill.

Below the open window, I stumble
through a dream of love and

rejection -- a child again, fallen
out of step with the millipede, my teacher.

Like a cooling mantra, an early morning breeze
ripples, then settles over my tightened brow.

I will honor the thousand-legged,
the single heart.
