Lepidolite is a rare form of highly lustrous mica which forms within granite rock formations containing substantial amounts of lithium, the relative amount of lithium in the lepidolite producing the characteristic color range from white to pink to magenta to violet.
Lepidolite crystals are created from sheets of lithium aluminum silicate, bonded together by clouds of potassium ions. Tabular and prismatic crystals of lepidolite form in nature, and lepidolite is often found within a matrix of other materials, producing the characteristic appearance of the lepidolite in these specimens.
