History and Mythology of The Green Man Archtype

The Green Man is a fertility archetype that has roots in medieval European mythology and analogues in Qabbalistic, Egyptian, Greek Eleusinean, Celtic, Chinese, and Hindu spiritual traditions, to name just a few. The Green Man's popularity among New Agers, neopagans, environmentalists, tree-huggers, and Wiccan Goddess worshippers has exploded in the last fifty ears. In 2007, “Green Man” was the theme of the famous Burning Man Festival in California. But where did our modern fascination with the Green Man begin, and what are the esoteric spiritual implications of this seemingly universal archetype of the masculine Nature Spirit married to Mother Earth?

Moldavite Green Man by Pedro Michel

The Green Man is often depicted as a male face within a tree, and/or crowned and surrounded by branches. vines and leaves. This foliate head design can be seen in an array of medieval Churches throughout Europe and Great Britain, and in more modern architecture as well.

A British noble, Lady Raglan wrote the first article about The Green Man in The Folklore Journal in England, in 1939. Lady Raglan theorized that the presence of The Green Man in Christian churches indicated an underground stream of unreconstructed pagan spirituality within the European Christian tradition. “The fact is that unofficial paganism subsisted side by side with the official religion,” Raglan writes, “and this explains the presence of our Green Man in a church window with the Virgin beside him and below him the sun.”

Modern medieval scholars discount this theory because there are no written records referring to The Green Man extant, and thus no way to explicate the contemporaneous meaning of these ancient Green Man images.

This has in no way diminished the power of popularity of The Green Man worldwide, nor does it address the roots of The Green Man archetype in Western Qabbalistic lore, as exemplified in the tradition of Tarot, or in other spiritual traditions, many predating medieval times.

Tarot Trump I, The Fool, Crowley Tarot Deck

Tarot Trump 0, The Fool, by Aleister Crowley and Lady Frieda Harris

The Green Man is associated with Tarot Trump 0, known as The Fool. In the Crowley-Harris deck, pictured above, and published in The Book of Thoth in 1944. As depicted, The Fool is a Green Man with horns suggestive of the Great God Pan, standing in mid-air. A crystalline cone rises up from the crown of his head, intersecting a pyramid of light surrounding his crown. He holds an upside down chalice in his right hand, and a white dove appears to be flying out of it. In his left hand he holds a fiery flame that appears almost to be the shape of a pine cone, associated with Dionysus, as is the bunch of grapes depending from his left shoulder, along with a sack containing many coins with astrological symbols, indicating the cards of the Tarot deck, the many paths and nodes comprising the Tree of Life. The coins in the sack represent unlimited potential. Because the coins, or cards, have not been selected, all future possibilites remain open, and all outcomes may manifest.

Moldavite Green Man by Pedro MichelThe Green Man represents the mysterious energies that awaken in all living beings at the onset of the season of spring on planet Earth, the Universal Life Force Energy that impels growth and triggers sexual desire. The Green Man represents the characteristics of Dionysus, the Greek God of luxuriant plant growth, intoxication, rampant sexuality and excess. Tammuz, Adonis and Osiris are vegetation gods associated with plant growth and greenness. In the Pyramid Texts at Saqqara Osiris is called the ‘Great Green’ and often appears green skinned as a symbol of ‘resurrection and life.’ All these dying and reborn gods of seasonal renewal, sexuality and plant growth are associated with aspects of the Great Goddess, often depicted as Mother and/or Lover to the Green Ones.

On a cosmic scale, The Fool represents the unmanifest totality, the cosmic egg, the transcendent unknowable Ground of Being, from which creation issues forth in its splendiferous abundance. This unknowable Source is known in Buddhism as the Void, and is analogous to the Hindu God Brahman. This transcendent, unknowable reality is the realm in which male and female gods and goddesses achieve ultimate unity, and thus The Green Man and his analogues, such as the Greek God Dionysus sometimes display both male and female characteristics.

Properties of Moldavite

Moldavite is a rare bottle-green translucent stone of unearthly origins, more rare than diamonds, rubies or sapphires.

Scientists postulate that a meteor shower in Germany some 15-20 million years ago liquified the landscape where the meteors landed, forming fused glass at very high heat, which was then ejected from the meteor craters in Germany and propelled hundreds of miles away, landing in the Moldau Valley of Czechoslovakia -- site of the only moldavite known to exist.
As the melted rock  traveled at high speed through the upper atmosphere, the super-heated material was shaped into a variety of unusual formations typical of splash patterns found in liquids:  spherical, oval, drop, dumbbell, elliptical, rodlike or spiral. The rarest of moldavites resemble intricate opened flowers.

Scientists are unsure about the exact origins or composition of moldavite. It is not considered to be a member of the mineral family and displays unusual characteristics. It is classed as a mineraloid gemstone, a member of the tektite family, with no classifiable crystal structure. Moldavite's chemistry is unique and as yet unexplained.

Moldavite Green Man by Pedro MichelMoldavites are the rarest of gems, perhaps more rare than diamonds, rubies or emeralds. Moldavites have been prized for over 25,000 years, since archaeologists have discovered moldavite shards and pieces in cave dwellings of that era.

In his book Moldavites: The Czech Tektites, Professor Vladimir Bouska states that "The first human being that was interested in Moldavites was a Cro-Magnon man from the aurignacian age, i.e., the Upper Paleolithic. Several potsherds [fragments] of green Moldavite glass were found together with the famous statue of Venus of Willendorf, which is about 29,000 years old, at Willendorf in Lower Austria."

Moldavite is known as the "Grail Stone". Legends say that the Holy Grail was formed out of a green stone that fell from Lucifer's crown as he descended from his heavenly abode to Hell, impelled by the force of a blow from the sword of Michael the Archangel. Until recently it was assumed the Grail Stone was emerald, but recently metaphysical rockhounds have suggested that the true Grail Stone is moldavite, a translucent green gemstone that fell from the sky millions of years ago.

Metaphysical rockhounds and crystal healers say that moldavite activates any and all of the chakras and also opens the mind to the limitless possibilities inherent in its cosmic origins. Moldavite's energy tends to dissipate blocks throughout the energy system and then center energy in the heart, opening the heart to universal love.

Moldavite Green Man by Pedro MichelMoldavite is a the stone of transformation, par excellence. Working with Moldavite can have a profound effect, enabling the holder or wearer of this exceptional stone to consciously release unwanted programs, scripts, energies & thinking from their lives. The bearer of moldavite will often find that difficult or painful people, situations and conditions will be released, and then replaced by similar people, places or situations that are more congenial, more positive and more beneficial.

If you want change in your life, Moldavite can expedite that change, connecting you to Source & your own Divinity.

From personal experience during meditation with Moldavite, I can tell you that much depends upon intent. When my intent has been to quiet the mind, holding one of these crystals reduces mental chatter to virtually nothing, while stimulating the crown chakra, the third eye & the eighth chakra above the crown, creating a feeling of warmth & depth, a buzzing and a tingling on the crown of the head and between the eyebrows. There was a physical awareness of a tremendous flows of energy carried on the inbreath and outbreath from the eighth chakra and higher, spiritual sources, through these vital centers and deep into the body.

Concentration on the inner light, and inner meditative visualizations were greatly enhanced, and the ability to connect to inner spiritual guidance, Guides and Teachers increased markedly.

This crystal has been cleaned with Universal Life Force Energy, and given an energy attunement using Reiki, a Japanese technique of energy healing, so it will continue to receive and transmit Universal Life Force Energy direct from the Source of Creation.
