The harvest is in!

I made this tea one night when I was tired of fighting a stubborn viral cold which wouldn't go away. I made a quart of tea in a mason jar and covered it to catch all the extra minerals and nourishment that I could. I made it very strong, then strained it into a cup with a generous amount of local honey, added a dash of lemon balm tincture and drank it very hot! Then made more to let it steep overnight, so that the maximum amount of minerals and vitamins could be infused into the water, so I could drink more the following day.

That night, I slept very soundly and my stomach calmed down, my cough quieted and I had a peaceful night's sleep. The next morning, I felt refreshed and my cough and my outlook, were both much improved.

Lemon balm has anti-viral and ant-bacterial properties and a delicious lemony flavor which not only improves digestion but also fights melancholy. It's important when you are not feeling well, to work with herbs and/or flowers which uplift the spirit as well as working on healing the body.

Stinging nettles, (as anyone who knows me can tell you) is one of our favorite household remedies. We drink nettles tea, year round to fight everything from upset stomach to allergies. It is a very useful herb for the endocrine, digestive, respiratory and circulatory system. It is a tremendous ally for menopausal women among many many other virtues.

Peppermint of course, is one of my favorite herbs to mix into tea blends. It is interesting how mint can boost flavor without overpowering a flavor if used judiciously, which it is in this mixture. Mint also fights fevers by helping you to perspire, it is a digestive, and also a good herb to fight bacteria and viruses, highly regarded by Native Americans to fight congestion.

Lemon Grass can even be grown here in the Northeast of the US, even though it is a tropical herb grass. It has been used for centuries as a digestive, to fight depression and fever as well as nervous disorders. It too has anti-bacterial properties and anti-fungal properties as well.

Besides all of that good news, this tea is just plain delicious, with or without honey to sweeten. Drink it hot or cold, any time of year, for any reason, mostly to taste something good, that is also good for you!

You can see a closeup of the herb mix in the photo to the right. Try adding in a few drops of lemon balm tincture also available from Jane's Homemade.
