Ametrine is a combination of two powerful semi-precious stones, amethyst and citrine. Energetically, the combination of amethyst and citrine acts as a powerful protective and purifying influence, strengthening the aura, which is, after all the best protection. Ametrine energizes and helps open crown, third eye and heart chakras, connecting the egoistic personality to the Source of Higher Mind, and thus to a conscious awareness of Higher Purpose. Amethyst is a form of quartz crystal with impurities that lend the stone its characteristic color, ranging from pale blue to deep purple. Citrine is less common in nature than amethyst, but both are found in quartz veins, as well as volcanic locations and elsewhere in nature. The color of citrine derives from small amounts (approximately 40 parts per million) of iron impurities in the quartz. The difference between citrine and amethyst is only the oxidation state of the iron impurities present in the quartz. Amethyst is classically the stone of sobriety, purity and chastity and would be an excellent stone for those with tendencies toward addictive behavior, or for those spiritual seekers intent upon transformation through the progressive purification of mind, body and aura. Citrine is a form of quartz characterized by a yellow color, ranging from white to deep copper. Citrine's color is a result of iron impurities occurring naturally within the crystal. Citrine typically is formed as an amethyst which becomes heated to the point where the iron held within the crystal undergoes a further stage of oxidation. Sometimes, when crystals are subject to uneven heating within the earth, amethyst and citrine are found mixed within the same formation. This is known as ametrine, and can be quite beautiful. Ametrine combines the purifying and elevating energies of amethyst with the cleansing and energizing properties of citrine. According to Melody’s valuable book, Love is in the Earth, citrine is one of only two minerals on Earth that do not hold or accumulate negative energy. Instead citrine transforms negative energy and dissipates it once it has been rendered positive in nature.
