Properties of Peridot

Peridot (also known as olivine) is the common name given by  gemologists and jewelers to several varieties of a fairly rare magnesium iron silicate crystal commonly found in lava formations and meteorites -- known more technically by mineralogists as fosterite and fayalite.

In America many jewelers sell green garnets as "peridot", which is somewhat confusing. Garnets are far more common than the much more desirable and hard to get "true" peridot, which is available only from a very few volcanic locations around the world, and from even more rare meteorite falls.

True peridot has a hardness of 6.5 to 7 and a high specific gravity, due to the presence of iron in the gemstone, which is often found in igneous formations heavy in hematite. Peridot kinds and colours vary as follows: chrysolite is a yellowish green; peridot or "evening emerald" normally exhibits olive pistachio or leek-green colour, of a hue more subdued than the emerald.

Peridot is said to have been one of the stones found in the breastplate of the high priest.

In the Western mystery school traditions and many New Age chakra systems, yellow is the color of the third chakra, found in the stomach and solar plexus region, which is associated with the astral body and issues of personal power, hopes, dreams, fantasies and aspirations. In these systems, green is associated with the fourth, or heart chakra, the mental body, issues of relationship, universal feelings of unity and compassion, and individual beliefs and values.

Carnelian is said be one of the sacred stones placed in the Breastplate of the High Priest of Israel, in the Old Testament.

Carnelian resonates with the energy signature of the second chakra, which in the Western chakra system is said to have an orange color.  The second chakra is located in the pubic area, and governs the sexual organs, liver, kidney, pancreas, spleen and adrenal glands.

The second chakra, called "Svadisthana" in the Indian chakra system, regulates the energies associated with creativity, sexual energy, and close relationships. Whether we want to birth a baby, start a business, create a symphony, paint a masterpiece, write the Great American novel, or simply express our Higher Purpose through joyous living, the energy of the Svadisthana chakra is what will provide us with the power to reach our goals.

Properties of Opal

The word opal comes from the Sanskrit word "upala", meaning "precious stone," and the later Greek word "opallios", meaning "to see a change of color."

Opals are hard, very light and somewhat fragile gemstones composed of micro-spheroids of hydrous silica, and is never found in crystalline form, but rather in small veins, globules or crusts in rock formations. The fire within the opal is said to stimulate the inner fire of the bearer, helping to activate the kundalini energy which is said to reside in the root chakra, and which, when activated, rises to the crown of the head, triggering a variety of mystical experiences.

Properties of Garnets

Navajo garnets come from the Four Corners area of northeastern Arizona, a sacred site well-known to Native American spiritual practitioners and Lightworkers alike! These "pyrope" garnets, as they are known to mineralogists, are smaller than a pea, and display an amazing ruby red coloration, highly prized by collectors, but because these garnets tend to be so small they are seldom available in jewelry of any kind, and mainly crafted into small beads. The garnet derives its name from the pomegranate seed. Pomegranate is called punica granatum in Latin.
