This three dimensional, two sided icon was originally constructed as a talisman to provide protection from the misogynist culture in which we live. Holy Mary Now uses words and imagery to express the need for independence from archetypes misused in the hatred against women, and the need to reexamine some of those archetypes about women promoted by the Christian fathers, misogynists and partriarchs. It is a mixed media collage construction using copper wire, archival mat board, found imagery taken from tarot cards, prayer cards and magazines and scotch tape. It has the following text on it: Holy Mary now and Foot Worship which can be seen in the detail above. The text Holy Mary now rests in place of the head, to inspire us to resacralize the image of the Mother and the text Foot Worship sits by the feet, to point out that we have made fetishes of women's body parts throughout history, from the footbinding of China to the current fashion of bone crushing high heels. The back of the card (seen on the right) has a dancing joyous naked female figure set within the truncated Venus de Milo torso, which is surrounded by plastic irridescent paper. This icon measures 6.5" x 3" from the tip of the top wire loop to the wire fringes on the bottom seen pictured below.
