Kung Hei Fat Choi ! (Congratulations and be prosperous, Everyone!) and Happy Valentineís Day!

Letís begin with a little story, which takes place some centuries past, in a time when people believed in spirits and had great faith:

A stiffening breeze wafted up from the Indian valleys into the Nepali foothills in the shadow of the Himalayas.

The winds carried portents as well as moisture, the countless thoughts of beings and prayers of gods and spirits in the subcontinent, and for the creatures of the forests who were busy with their dreams, the breeze brought them visions of things to be come, solutions to problems and welcome relief from the heat of the summerís oppression.

As the moist currents of air rose skyward along the spines of the rising ridges the moisture formed fog and mists which pervaded the verdure of the Inner Terai, adding to the mystical quality of the day.

Still a bit higher, and the mists began to condense on the leaves of the plants, causing sporadic droplets of rain to fall on the inhabitants of the forest floor below.

As the gentle rain began to fall, a few drops hit the nose of the slumbering White Tiger, rousing him from his sojourn in the astral worlds where he had been in the company of one of the local resident spirit lords of the sacred places there. Cats are the messengers of the astral worlds, you know, and they report on the affairs of the world to the gods.

The White Tiger was a majestic Royal Bengal, in the prime of his life, revered in local legend and worshipped by the people in the villages of the high forests. They would often leave ritual offerings for him and the odd sacrifice or two. Because of their kindness to him in the past he had stayed within a close distance to the villages but was always careful at the same time to keep his distance.

The relationship with the villagers had been a good one over the years but had been somewhat troubled of late, though, because strangers had appeared on the trade routes through the villages and the villagers had been hearing stories from the strangers about the virility tigers could bring when placed in medicinal preparations. A white tiger such as he, they said, would fetch a handsome price for the efforts of the man who could catch him. White tigers are rare and were said to have special properties above and beyond those of the average tiger.

ìAverage tiger! Humph!î the White Tiger thought. ìThere is no such thing! We are the kings of the beasts!î

In his astral sojourn that day he had asked the local spirit lord about the strangers and why they were so interested in him. It would seem that the local legends about the White Tiger had spread beyond his hills into lands farther afield. The spirit lord took a particular interest in the White Tiger that day, for the spirit lord could see into the future and he saw the fate that awaited not just the White Tiger, but all the tigers of the area. He thought the White Tiger could perform a great service to all in the area ñ one that would have benefits far into the future, so he engaged him and began to regale him with tales of the foreigners and tigers in faraway lands.

ìAh! My majestic friend!î said the spirit lord. ìYou come here seeking to know your fate. You have been a great help over the years and have reported faithfully and well, so it is only correct that I should treat you in kind.î

Thus he began: ìDays of darkness are about to befall this beautiful land. People multiply unchecked and their greed and need know no bounds. The foreigners of whom you ask are from lands far to the east of your beloved mountain range. Theirs is a violent land, ruled by warlords and degenerate monarchs. There is little peace and the people live in fear and superstition, save for the few who know and live the Way. There are many tigers in the north of their land and they are viewed with awe by the people of the villages.î

ìRightly so!î interjected the White Tiger, interrupting the spirit lord, which tigers are known to do. The spirit lord smiled benignly at the White Tiger, bemused by his lack of decorum.

ìYes, my friend ñ rightly so!î said the spirit lord, suddenly erupting into laughter. The White Tiger was taken aback by this unexpected turn by a normally composed spirit lord and decided to take a more composed stance, not knowing what this being would do next.

The spirit lord continued: ìAs I was saying, tigers are viewed with great awe in that land. However, because they are seen to be so virile and powerful people think they can gain those qualities themselves by killing tigers and putting their parts into medicines. Young men are also sent out alone to hunt them as a test of their manhood and courage.

A tigerís skin and head is a prized trophy to such a young man and he is seen to have the potential thus to be a great warrior. It is indeed a very sad state of affairs. If people could only realize that their efforts at attaining any of a tigerís greatness by eating them are futile at best, then they would cease their hunting. But, alas, tigers fetch a high price with the pharmacists because of peopleís superstitions. The great beasts there, your brothers, have been forced into secluded areas and are reduced to hunting at night.î

A shiver went through the White Tiger and he grew very anxious and quiet, realizing suddenly why people had been trying to draw him closer into the villages. He knew his relationship to the villagers would be very different from then on.

ìStill,î the spirit lord continued: ìit has not always been thus with the people of that land. In centuries before when there was more reverence for life and not nearly so much need or greed, the tiger was seen as one of the great sovereign animals and he was relegated to the heavens. The great Tiger of the Heavens was, like you, white and he could be seen with the Pleiades. He was the Lord of the West, the region of departed spirits and was the administrator of justice ñ greatly revered, as are you, my noble friend.î

ìIt would appear that I am not so revered any longerî bemoaned the White Tiger, the thought of his being viewed as a mere trophy deeply unsettling him, although he was most pleased to have his place in the heavens. ìIs there anything to be done about this terrible injustice being forced upon my brothers in that distant land? Surely there is something I could do.î

A knowing smile creased the face of the spirit lord. ìActually, my friend, there is something you can do, but it will require every bit of your stealth, patience and skill at working behind the scenes. We have a task for you. You have proved yourself worthy over the years and we know you will execute your task well. It will serve no useful purpose at all for your head to be mounted on a pole and your skin to be worn as a warriorís garment. No, you can help to save your brothers for centuries into the future. We want you to leave this mountain and go out into the jungles and valleys beyond and to the southwest. The villagers here have lost their faith and have forgotten the healing powers of their forest. They seek now to follow the advice of the travelers and to gain your majesty through eating you, rather than by emulating you. In the valleys below it will still be difficult, but at least the people there still have the respect of nature and practice compassion for all living things. Over the years, even centuries, your example will inspire people to save tigers, rather than to kill and use them for their own advancement. The only caution we have is that you not harm any human. Some of your brothers there eat villagers and have grown to like the meat. Perhaps they want to become human?î The spirit lord cast a knowing smile. ìYou are to stand as an example, to the people and to your brothers there. We need for you to be aloof from the humans. Then they will respect you. People have a curious way of trying to emulate that which is difficult of attainment.î

The White Tiger was deeply saddened by this news, but he knew within himself that the spirit lord had spoken true and was correct. On several recent occasions some of the villagers had gone out with nets and spears and had almost cornered him, but he knew the forest too well and always managed to elude them. They would leave sacrifices close to the villages in open spaces in an effort to draw him out, but the other animals always warned him, for which he was secretly grateful. He knew the people would try to stop him leaving, though, and the spirit lord read his thoughts on that matter very clearly.

ìIt is vital to face opposition to plans.î said the spirit lord. ìI know, too, that many of your brothers here are telling you to stand and fight, but that will only bring your swift demise, as it will mobilize the villagers against you. There are always those who disagree, but the design is sound and it is time to act decisively. There is no time to waste. Use the forest as your cover and travel only at night. The forest will guide you there, as will we. You know the richness of the forests and hills. Valuable resources are put to good use. Stay away from the paths and roads and travel only in the dense cover of the forest. We will make certain you are fed. When you awake, begin your journey with haste, for some of the travelers are coming for you as we speak.î

As the gentle forest rain began to fall more heavily on the White Tiger he awoke fully from his reverie. In the distance he could hear the barking of dogs and the hairs went up on his back. He knew the spirit lord had spoken in truth. He growled his displeasure at having to leave his beloved domain, but he knew full well what awaited him should he stay. Thankful for the information, but heavy at heart, he arose and sniffed the air, seeking to find his direction and a safe passage out. A lone magpie song gave him the omen he sought, and bidding his goodbye to his brothers and the good people of the villages he set out on his journey to a strange land. What would await him? Who would he meet? Would his life be hard? Still, he knew he was up to the task. He would be the finest example of a tiger there ever was, and with conviction as his guiding star, he set off down the mountain through the mists.

_____________

I trust all of you had a very happy New Year celebration and were no too sore-headed the next day. What awaits us this year? The times are unsettled to say the least and people are wary. We have not seen this level of economic instability in many decades and such uncertainty usually carries the winds of great discontent. I know friends and their families who struggle and have trouble keeping work or even finding work.

Economic troubles, if prolonged, also carry the seeds of insurrection and war as frustrations rise to the boiling point. Hopefully we have learned form the past and will not see fit to go down such a path this time around. Tiger years are traditionally ones of great change and innovation, and we will see some of that this year. However, to gain a prospectus of what this year will bring we need to look at the conditions leading up to it. Looking back at the year just past, I stated the following in the Chinese New Year letter for the Ox last year:

ìOx years are notorious in recent history for being bad years financially ñ and it certainly does not look to be an exception this Year of the Ox. The market will be anything but ëbullishí this year. Doom and gloom aside, there are some very positive things to commend the Year just started and we may very well see some things turn around in a positive way. As we will seeÖ Earth Ox Years have generally been ones of consolidations, new starts and the institution of social programs. That does not mean that financial issues will necessarily be better, though. Social programs and new initiatives cost money, and it will take a few years before things begin to stabilize on that front, I think.

Ö.. In summary, then, we have the following synopsis for the dynamics of the Year of the Earth Ox:

--consolidation of national and state groups

--financial legislation and consolidation of financial sectors in society

--advances in commercial media and transport

--major governmental initiatives in social welfare and economic reforms

--huge natural or accidental disasters, especially with regard to regions or cities (financial losses and loss of life)î

What did we see, then, with regard to the preceding points?

--consolidation of national and state groups

The only major development in this area was in the ratification of the Treaty of Lisbon within the EU. Bolivia also granted its indigenous people the right to self-rule, and as well we saw the end of the civil war in Sri Lanka.

--financial legislation and consolidation of financial sectors in society

This was a big year and a continuing saga of several crises: The worldwide automotive sector meltdown, with bailouts of General Motors and Chrysler in the US, the Russian financial Crisis, the Icelandic Banking Crisis, the Subprime Mortgage Crisis in the US and the general worldwide financial crises. In general, we saw massive bailouts worldwide, especially in the US, with debt that will take many years to downgrade, possibly a generation. Unemployment figures in the US are still at around 10%, the worst it has been since the mid-70ís, when it hit 9%.

--advances in commercial media and transport

In terms of commercial media, the best-known advance, perhaps, is Avatar, the film which has captivated the world. Film media has reached a new height with computer animation. There were no significant advances in transport. We saw the launch of the World Digital Library by Unesco, but also the death of Michael Jackson (which was not an advance, but was a huge media event and caused some of the biggest internet activity in recent times).

--major governmental initiatives in social welfare and economic reforms

The big story here was the Obama administrationís attempt to introduce health care reform and the storm of controversy it produced. As well, one can consider that the economic bailouts were an attempt to stabilize the public and to calm fears of a total meltdown, which has somewhat worked in the interim, though we will have to wait to see the effects down the road. This year will be the deciding year for many of the efforts at economic and social reforms, although the ideas were introduced in 2008/2009. Concerns over global warming are beginning to become political fodder, though the legislation around that will largely be seen in the future as a tax grab by various governments and not a real attempt at reform. The Rudd governmentís (Australia) Carbon Trading scheme is a case in point.

--huge natural or accidental disasters, especially with regard to regions or cities

OK. 2009 was a big year with this one: The Black Saturday Fires in Australia, the LíAquila Quake,

the Air France crash, the Yemeni Flight 626 crash, the Caspian Airlines Flight 7908 crash, Typhoon Morakot, the SamoanIslands tsunami, the Sumatra Quake and the recent terrible Haitian Quake. Though there were no ëaccidental disastersí with regards to regions, there were the three major air disasters, all three of which resulted in the deaths of nearly, if not all, on board.

Are we better off since the year of the Ox? We will have to wait and see. Things have picked up in Australia since about December of last year, but the general feeling about the place here is a wait-and-see attitude. Businesses I do work for are not hiring, though they are beginning to spend a bit on infrastructure as money starts to come in a bit. As expected, people are nervous and tight-fisted with money, perhaps rightly so.

Yet the governments are telling people and companies to spend and for the banks to lend, much of which is falling on deaf ears. It is very difficult to go against human nature, as people in hard times tend to opt for the safe bet and the lowest common denominator. So, on the one hand we have a nervous public and business sector and on the other hand governments that are scrambling to clean up the causes for the mess we are in ñ overspending, faulty lending practices and poor fiscal policy.

What can we expect to see in the Year of the White Tiger, then? In surveying past White Tiger years, the following patterns have stood out:

Revolutionary tendencies and insurrections in the political arena.

Advances and major accidents in transport

Attempts at imposing or strengthening draconian legislation

Advances in media

Resurgence of the working classes and antitrust legislation

Overhauls of political and economic systems that are oppressive or do not work (with a consequent reactionary front from those who would rather keep those systems in place)

Explorerís instinct and entrepreneurial spirit will be to the fore.

New products come out in White Tiger years that tend to become ëold standardsí later

Some examples of the above from past Iron Tiger Years are as follows, though the list is actually very condensed:

1710:

The worldís first copywrite legislation (Britainís Statute of Anne)

1770:

The Boston Massacre, which culminated in the American Revolution in 1776, the discovery of Botany Bay (now SydneyHarbour, leading to the first European settlement in Australia)

1830:

The July Revolution (the downfall of Charles X of France due to economic and religious unrest), Belgian Revolution (which led to the establishment of Belgium as a sovereign state), November Uprising (Polish uprising against Russian rule, also known as the Polish Insurrection), the Book of Mormon first published and the formalization of Mormonism, 1st commercial passenger train, which ran between Liverpool and Manchester, the invention of the sewing machine, the first meeting of the National Negro Convention, with the expressed view of abolishing slavery, the signing into law of the Indian Removal Act in the US.

1890:

The Sherman Antitrust laws (anti-monopolistic legislation), the New Scotland Yard, United Mine Workers Union, Jim Crow laws began to be hardened into place (the terrible segregationist laws in place in the US for many decades), a flurry of tornados that wreaked havoc, the British Steamship wreck, along with many other steamship wrecks in that year, the Massacre at Wounded Knee (one of the last great tragic episodes of the Indian/American wars)

From the preceding, we can expect to see economic unrest growing this year. There are a series of eclipse activations around the middle of this year, coupled with the Saturn/Uranus oppositions and Saturn/Pluto square. The mid-year looks to be fairly unstable and volatile, especially politically and economically. We will see what comes up. There is growing racism in the world, especially as a reaction against immigration policies in western nations. Half of the younger generations in Italy, for instance, are said to be quite racist, and there is a strong streak of it in Australia as well, not to mention other parts of the world. That racism will add fuel to the fire of any economic unrest, as immigrants will be seen to be taking the jobs of ënativesí. Tigers are known to be rather strongly opinionated and sometimes racist, and this year will see some of that being more strongly pronounced.

Unfortunately, some people will play on that sort of thing to get their own agendas across, and there are a fair number of elections taking place this year. Elections, especially in the
US and Australia, will be very hotly contested and the conservative elements in those countries will be out in force.

ëIroní in Chinese astrology is equivalent with justice. Venus is the Metal Planet and is said to rule over the administration of justice, military pursuits, weapons, all things metallic (such as metal refining and so forth), the ësorting of the sheep from the goatsí and retribution. Past Iron Tiger years have borne these types of energies. One of the great things about Tigers is that they rise up against injustice, and this year will see that magnified. It is not a year to be faint-hearted. Last year the admonition was that there be no disharmony between family and business (the Subprime Mortgage Crisis was a classic in that regard ñ dodgy business practices destroying the home lives of millions of Americans).

This year the admonition, from the story, is ì
It is vital to face opposition to plansî. The thing is parties on all sides have their own plans and agendas, so we have a sort of ëcosmic setupí here for confrontations and showdowns in many areas of life. One of the most famous in recent Iron Tiger years on the world stage was the Korean Conflict, which started in 1950, and still we posture.

Tigers are big on alliances, but they also like doing things in secret. The Korean Conflict was both a covert and an open conflict, with strong alliances formed on both sides. We can expect the same sorts of things this year as well. The big difference between this year and past Iron Tiger years is the ubiquity of the internet, however. It is not so easy to keep things secret these days. Phones now are connected directly to the internet and all one has to do is point the camera in the phone, click and send around the world.

People have to be very careful. I expect to see big challenges to privacy and legislation for privacy this year. Full body scanners are in the news now, for instance, and you can bet your bottom dollar that some of those images will make their way onto the internet, causing a public storm. Cyber warfare is a big possibility this year, too, and we are already hearing rumblings of that sort of thing out of China and other places. He who controls information rules the world, or so the saying goes. Tigers are vigilant, though, and we can expect new security measures to come out as well as increased attempts at hacking. In many ways this Iron Tiger year will be more subtle, more mental, than those in the past. Much will go on beyond the public eye.

One of the things that interests me most, however, is the possibility of inventions and new ways of doing things, for which Tigers are renowned. Tigers are pioneers and are always on the cutting edge of what they do. Metal is about inventiveness, standing up for oneself and the entrepreneurial spirit. Colonel Sanders was an Iron Tiger and Kentucky Fried Chicken, his brainchild, (KFC) is a household name now. When I was in Chengdu, China recently there was not a McDonalds in sight, but there was a KFC standing right in the middle of the electronics district of the city. I guess the Chinese love their fried chicken, too.

Expect to see new products and entrepreneurial chains born this year, ones that will last far into the future. When you think of Iron Tiger products, think of things like cardboard boxes, sewing machines, Pepsi Cola, peanut butter, hamburgers and beloved iconic comic strips or films. Tiger types buck the trends of the day, are experimentalists and are totally unafraid of try new things. It is exactly the sort of energy we need to bring us out of the doldrums and to carry us through to better times. From my forthcoming book on the Four Pillars, what follows is an extract on the character of Tiger types, which applies to the year as well:

ìSome people are born to lead, the rest to follow. The Tiger is a natural leader in any field of life. Being a loner or individualist by nature, the Tiger knows very well and from frequent experience the old adage that says, ìIt is lonely at the top.î This is not to say that Tigers are lonely types or that they will have few friends because, in fact, they often have many friends and they make good friends themselves. It is said in traditional Chinese astrology that one is very fortunate to have a Tiger as a friend as they will fight for you when the chips are down, besides which they are very lively and stimulating companions

Tiger types will do what they have to do to achieve their aims. They are very good at working behind the scenes and many times people around them will be surprised when the Tiger moves on a plan that may seem to have gone by-the-by, but had actually been decided upon some time before in the Tigerís mind. The sudden attack is a forte with this type, and competitors had better beware the calm exterior that often belies a foment of activity or shrewdness beneath the surface. In business Tigers are very adept at directing others to achieve success. In so doing, they can make spectacular progress themselves because they can form strong loyalties with coworkers and people they mentor. They are very shrewd operators and there is always a plan working its way quietly in the Tigerís mind, waiting for that opportune moment to find application or fulfillment.

Wood, being the native Element of Tigers and Rabbits, gives an expansive view and a need for space. It also contributes greatly to the creative instinct and gives a lot of drive in that direction. Tigers have tremendous presence when they are engaged in their work or activities and Wood gives them their sense of uprightness, fairness and honesty. There is a tremendous integrity with most Tiger types and they would rather go without than to go against their ethic or sense of fairness.

Being natural rulers, they will never sit for long in a subordinate position. If the Tiger is found in the Hour Pillar it often inclines the native to leadership and pioneering spirit in the arts. By Day the Tiger will endow the native with strong leadership qualities, especially in social circles. One always knows where one stands with one who has the Tiger as the Day Pillar. In the Month Pillar, the family of birth has played a very strong role in guiding the life of the native. As a result, Tigers by Month will play a very strong guiding role in all their close relationships. Of all the Pillars, the Month Pillar marked by the Tiger makes for the best personal motivators or trainers of just about any other sign. The Tiger by Year is very strong in the arts, especially the performing arts and they make for a formidable presence on any stage, whether theatrical or political. Interestingly, some of the great poets have been Tigers by Year.

Tigers are always independent and love a challenge. Hence, in whatever walk of life in which they are found they will be known as innovators, pioneers, instigators or even firebrandsÖ..î

Famous Iron Tigers: Agatha Christie, Stan Laurel (of Laurel and Hardy fame), Ho Chi Minh, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Groucho Marx, Anthony Fokker (Fokker aircraft), Boris Pasternak (Doctor Zhivago), Colonel Sanders (KFC), Emily Dickinson, William Wordsworth, Hegel (philosopher), Mark Spitz, Natalie Cole, Julius Irving, Helen Clark (PM of NZ), Bobby McFerrin, William Hurt, Peter Frampton, Jay Leno, Stevie Wonder, Bill Murray (actor), Tom Petty, John Candy, to name but a few.

Other Famous Tigers:

Year: Enrico Caruso (Hour as well), John Coltrane, Miles Davis (Day as well), Queen Elizabeth II, Karl Marx, Marilyn Monroe, Maximilien Robespierre, Upton Sinclair, Sun Yat-Sen (Hour as well)

Month: Tsarevich Alexis, Evangeline Adams, Eddie Arcaro (jockey), Harry Belafonte, Alexander Graham Bell, Andre Breton, George Frame Brown, Richard Burton, Robert Burton, Paul Choisinard, Lawrence Durrell, Galileo, Francis Galton, Jean Harlow, George Harrison, Rex Harrison, Patty Hearst, Victor Hugo, Edward Kennedy (Hour as well), Yoko Ono, Elizabeth Taylor, George Washington, Alfred Witte (astrologer, Year as well)

Day: Otto von Bismarck, Edward Broadbent (Canadian politician), Prince Consort Albert, Henry Ford, Mohandas Gandhi, Ernest Hemmingway, Adolph Hitler, Jimmy Hoffa, Michael Jackson, Lyndon Johnson, Vivien Leigh, Richard Nixon, Alfred Lord Tennyson, William Butler Yeats

Hour: Lewis Carroll, Agatha Christie, Arthur Conan Doyle, Reinhold Ebertin (astrologer), Queen Victoria, Arthur Fiedler (orchestral conductor), Francois Mitterand, JP Morgan (Day as well), Laurence Olivier, Frank Sinatra, Richard Wagner

In concluding, there is so much more that could be said, but what I have laid out here pretty well encapsulates the year and the energies the Tiger brings to bear. From the element count which follows at the very end of this letter, we see that Wood, Earth and Metal predominate. It will be an aggressive year for business and inventiveness. There is not so much emphasis on inspirational matters (lack of Fire) and the negative side of things is that there will be a fair amount of secrecy this year (lack of Water). It is a year of people tending their private affairs and getting on with things.

More than anything else, this is ëThe Year of Getting Realí, as I have dubbed 2010. If you have plans for your life, see where the opposition to those plans are and face them squarely and honestly. Realize that ëThere are always those who disagree, but the design is sound and it is time to act decisivelyíespecially if you know the design has come from within. And finally, it is time to ëPut valuable resources to good use.í Really, most of us are rich beyond the imagination of a great many people in the world. If we cannot make good with what we have, then our imagination ñ or lack of it - is our biggest problem. We need to expand our horizons, look outside the square and apply ourselves. The only thing impossible of attainment is that which we cannot imagine. Lastly, if you are so inclined, spare a thought for the few remaining tigers in the world, and check the link below:

It is a brave new year. Embrace it for all it is worth!

In love and friendship,
