Reiki is 'light touch' hands-on system of natural healing and spiritual enlightenment introduced to the world by Dr. Mikao Usui, in Japan in the early 20th century. Today it is practiced in hospitals, clinics and alternative health treatment centers all over the world. A recent IARP survey of American hospitals indicates that many major hospitals now use Reiki for its therapeutic benefits both pre and post-surgery, and for patients suffering from stress and other disorders. It was originally conceived to allay suffering and to cultivate a spiritual practice and evolution. To learn more about the origins of Reiki and how it is useful today, read the article "What is Reiki?". Go to the alt.healer directory to find Reiki practitioners in your area.

What Happens in a Reiki Session?

In a typical Reiki session, the client lies down on a Reiki table, surrounded by soft lighting and meditation music. The practitioner tunes into the Reiki energy and the energy passes to the client by a light touch or from the practitioner’s hands at a distance of a few inches over the skin. The recipient draws the energy from the practitioner into his or her body.

Reiki recipients normally experience a warm supportive flow of energy, which can be felt as a tingling in the body, a relaxation of muscles and mind, and a profound sense of tranquility.

Each person’s experience of Reiki is different. Some people experience flashes of insight, perhaps understanding the reason why they chose to experience their dis-ease. Others contact inner spiritual guidance in the form of visions, insights and imagery. Some find old wounds, fears and long-ago memories rising to the surface, followed by a cathartic release. read more...

We Are All Affected by Our Environment

A Mountain Lake

Reiki energy can be compared to a beautiful, lucid, clear mountain lake that feeds all beings on the mountainside and in the valleys below. Imagine first that your body is a small pond connected to a beautiful garden on a mountainside. Environmental impurities, traumatic events, negative emotions, the residue of unhealthy diet, lack of exercise and the stress of modern life live on in your body and aura in pockets of blocked energy that disrupt the flow of prana necessary for health and wellbeing. The Reiki practitioner has a pipe connected to the lake of Reiki, which sits high above the garden and the pond. The Reiki practitioner pumps that pure water from the lake through the pipe into your pond, flushing out all the toxins that have collected over time inside your body, mind and aura. read more...

Reiki and the Zero Point Field

Reiki is a Japanese word for Universal Life Force Energy.

Reiki energy is said to come from the Source of all creation. This Source is said to be the vital force that sustains the cosmos and infuses us with light and life, providing the energy source from which our bodies, and all forms of matter, arise.

People sometimes ask, could Reiki energy be an illusion? Could benefits come from a placebo effect? What is the scientific basis for such an energy to exist? Is this Universal Life Force Energy a metaphysical construct, a symbol, a myth?

On the contrary, we should ask ourselves if our common perceptions of reality create illusions. Perhaps our bodies and our egos are an illusion.

Perhaps energy is the fundamental nature of reality, the basic building block of everything in the perceptible Universe. If we could see the energy exchanges going on around us, we might live very different lives.

Dr. Mikao Usui, the founder of Reiki, provides an introduction to Reiki healing in this interview.

Gendai Reiki Ho is the English language website of the Reiki lineage taught by Japanese Reiki Master Hiroshi Doi, who is the author of perhaps the most informative text on Reiki now in English by a Japanese Reiki Master, Iyashino Gendai Reiki-ho, or Modern Reiki Method for Healing.

"Gendai Reiki-ho is a system of Reiki that I developed for myself, to receive the maximum benefit of Reiki, after having studied both traditional Reiki Ryoho and Western style Reiki," says Hiroshi Doi. "Its emphasis is on mind and body healing as well as spiritual growth."

Hiroshi Doi professes to have been a member of the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai, the secret Japanese society set up by some of Dr. Usui's students after his death, and which is still very much a closed book to foreigners to this day. He also received initiation into an American Reiki lineage from Mieko Mitsui, who had studied Barbara Ray's Radiance Technique, and into diverse other healing modalities, including Crystal Healing, Genkyoku Kiko, Seikiho, Dokiho, Astral Healing, and Silva Mind Control.

A Gendai Reiki-ho CD is available online for about $25 which demonstrates many of Hiroshi Doi's Reiki techniques, suitable for individual or group instruction.

Thoughtful, committed Christians seek accurate information and pray for guidance as part of deciding whether to adopt the practice of Reiki into their lives."

Amador has an irreverent and insightful perspective on the history of Reiki, on the various flavors of Reiki, and on the practice of Reiki generally. Vinnie says, “Your focus determines your reality. Where awareness is, there you are. If your focus is reiki, then you are reiki. Do not think it, BE IT. . . In the moment we are reiki, we are the expression of what is in love, compassion and kindness. We touch, we heal. In the moment when you stretch out your hand to heal where there is no self, no other, you *are* Reiki."

The Rose Carr Reiki Centre, in Lancashire, England, has published an online research report on 237 Reiki clients from 1999-2003, which indicates the identifying characteristics of these Reiki clients, the types of conditions for which they sought healing, what Reiki clients experience during and after individual treatments, and progress Reiki clients say they have made toward their treatment goals over time after a series of Reiki sessions. This is a very interesting study, which indicates Reiki was found to be extremely useful to alcohol addicts, people with allergies, anxiety, arthritis, asthma, bereavement, birth trauma, and many more conditions. There is also detailed information about conditions for which Reiki clients did not feel significant progress was made over time.

At the present time only Dave King and Laurie Ann King are the only recognized Usui-Do facilitators outside of Japan.

Reiki Healing, Universal Life Force Energy and the Zero Point Field

Anne Baring is a British Jungian analyst whose website contains many insights into the fascinating territory where frontier science intersects transpersonal psychology, mysticism and comparative mythology.

Here’s a link to an article Anne wrote introducing the concept of the Zero Point Field.

Dieter Duhm

is organizer of the Institute for Global PeaceWork in Portugal, and of Tamera, a spiritual and ecological community. Here’s a link to Reiki for Society: The Path to World Peace, Dieter’s fascinating take on the role of Universal Life Force Energy in a healthy human community, and on the role of Reiki in establishing a true human civilization based upon peace and spiritual principles.

Dr. Bernard Haisch

, astrophysicist, is Director of The California Institute for Physics and Astrophysics (CIPA), dedicated to exploring fundamental problems in physics (e.g. gravitation, inertia, the nature of mass) as well as very-long range technological possibilities that may emerge from the properties of the quantum vacuum.

Here’s an article Haisch wrote in Science and Spirit magazine called Brilliant Disguise: Light, Matter and the Zero-Point Field.

Is matter an illusion? Is the universe floating on a vast sea of light, whose invisible power provides the resistance that gives to matter its feeling of solidity? If Haisch is right, then the Zero Point Field could be the source of Universal Life Force Energy, which some call Reiki, and others prana or chi.

For those who want to explore Haisch’s brilliant theories firsthand, here is a link to an article by Haisch at the CIPA website providing a scientific introduction to the Zero Point Field. The CIPA website is chock full of both scholarly and popular articles on gravitation, inertia, and other topics crucial to understanding the new astrophysics of light energy and super-string theory.

Jim Oschman

is the author of a ground-breaking series of articles on "healing energy" published in the Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies. These articles have now been developed into a book, Energy Medicine: the scientific basis, published in the Spring of 2000 by Harcourt Brace/Churchill Livingstone, Edinburgh. Jim is one of the few academic scientists who has explored the basis for complementary and alternative medicines. He has published 26 full-length scientific articles in academic scientific journals and 40 articles in alternative and complementary therapy journals. In his work, he refers to the same science that provides the foundation for modern clinical medicine.

Here’s one of Oschman’s seminal articles, Science Measures the Human Energy Field, located on the website of The International Center for Reiki Training.

And here’s a link to Oschman’s own website.
